Autograph letters signed (2), dated : Schwerin, 30 November 1856 and 5 October 1859, to [Auguste Pittaud Deforges], 1856 Nov. 30 and 1859 Oct. 5.

Returning an opera libretto that Deforges sent, asking him to show it to Mme Deforges and to let Flotow know if it is suitable for the "Théâtre d'Offenbach," claiming that the truly bouffe genre is not entirely his own and expressing the hope that his music will not be too heavy for the text, saying that he just received a letter from Offenbach urging him to finish the score and to send it to him before the end of the year, discussing financial arrangements concerning the score [of La veuve Grapin], mentioning Ed. Monnais, Brandus, etc.; Deforges has written a brief letter signed on p. 1 of the 1859 letter.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman .
